How to Use NAT32 with 98SE ICS
Windows 98SE Internet Connection Sharing works
as follows:
-
Windows IP Routing is turned on so that traffic to
the IP address of the Sharing Interface (192.168.0.1) is routed to the
Shared Interface (typically a DUN connection or a Cable Modem Adapter),
which automatically becomes the default route.
-
A device driver intercepts all traffic routed to
the Shared Interface.
-
The Address Translation and Port Mappings are applied
(or undone) by that device driver.
To run NAT32 under Windows 98SE with ICS installed,
please download Build 1081 or later by clicking here.
Note that if you don't have ICS installed
on your Windows 98SE machine, none of the following instructions apply.
Instead, you simply configure NAT32 as outlined in the Reference
Manual.
First install the NDIS3PKT driver and then configure
NAT32 as follows:
To share a PPP connection
-
Create a file called: exclude in your NAT32
directory.
-
That file must contain the single line: Internet
Connection Sharing
-
That Adapter will then be excluded when you run NAT32.
-
Start NAT32 as: nat32.exe
1
-
Do not start it as you normally would: nat32.exe
ppp 1
-
The NAT32 Interface Configuration Dialog Box will
appear. The following settings are required:
-
Note that the Gateway must be specified as 192.168.0.1
and that the Primary Interface checkbox must be checked.
-
Click OK.
-
NAT32 will now use the Address 192.168.0.100
as its IP address on that Adapter, and your other machines must
then use that address as their Gateway and DNS addresses.
-
The NAT32 Console will print the warning that IP Routing is enabled. You
can safely ignore this warning.
-
Note that NAT32 knows nothing about the PPP Connection in this configuration.
None of the DUN Menu Items will be enabled. To start or stop a PPP Connection,
you must use Dial-Up Networking from within Windows.
To share a Cable Modem Adapter
-
Follow the same procedure as above, making sure you exclude the ICS Adapter.
-
Start NAT32 as: nat32.exe 2
-
Be sure to specify the 192.168.0.1
address as the Gateway, and be sure to check the Primary Interface
checkbox on the NAT32 Interface connected to the Windows 192.168.0.1
Adapter.
